RECAP:
Roy Williams gave the people of Texas a
glimpse of what they don't have anymore.
Joey Harrington threw two of his three touchdown passes to
Williams, and Eddie Drummond returned a kickoff for a score to
propel the Detroit Lions to a 28-16 victory over the Houston
Texans.
Harrington, who completed 18-of-25 passes for 176 yards, found
first-round pick Williams for a 31-yard TD that gave the Lions a
14-3 lead 8:22 into the third quarter.
After the Texans cut the deficit to four points on a 54-yard TD
catch by Andre Johnson with 2:31 left in the third, Drummond
returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a TD.
"Momentum, it brings the momentum right back to us and that
boosted the whole stadium and we got it rolling," Drummond said.
"When I saw the kicker, I basically knew I had it."
Williams, the seventh overall pick out of Texas, added a 14-yard
touchdown catch with 4:41 remaining in the fourth. He finished
with four catches for 73 yards.
"I know everybody was watching in Texas and we came out with a
victory, so sorry, Texas," Williams said. "We're a new team now
in Detroit and we happen to be 2-0."
Detroit is 2-0 for the first time since 2000. The last time they
started 3-0 was in 1980, before Williams was born.
Rookie running back Kevin Jones had 57 yards on 12 carries for
Detroit.
"I felt more comfortable," Jones said. "Like I said during the
week, I needed to slow down and I got to read things a little
bit better. I just tried to be consistent today."
Houston's David Carr passed for 313 yards and two touchdowns. He
also was sacked five times and threw an interception.
"You cannot turn the ball over three times," Carr said. "It's
hard to fight back from that. It's hard for the defense to play.
It's hard for the special teams. It's hard for everybody."
Domanick Davis was responsible for two of the turnovers,
fumbling twice. Although he carried 25 times for 78 yards and
caught 11 passes for 95 yards, Davis has four fumbles in two
games.
"Domanick just has to hold onto the football," Houston coach Dom
Capers said. "He's got to do a better job and he knows that. It
doesn't make any difference how many yards you gain. If you
turn the ball over, you are not going to win in this league.
It's just that simple."
The Texans are 0-2 for the first time in club history.
"All that shoulda, woulda, coulda -- you've got to do it,"
Houston defensive end Gary Walker said. "It's going on three
years and you're saying the same things after every game. That
gets old after a while."
Scott's Game Commentary:While I was at Oakland Hills watching the Europeans had the Americans their worst loss in Ryder Cup history, Roy Williams and company were celebrating another Lions victory. For the first time in several years, the Lions are 2-0 after beating an overrated Houston Texans team. Although I did not see any of the game, the Roy Williams touchdown catch was spectaular. It just burns me to no end to think if Rogers would have stayed healthy how good the offense could have been. Just like in the Bears game, the special teams made the difference as Eddie Drummond returned a kickoff the distance after the Texans scored a touchdown. The defense did their job again creating turnovers. I find it funny how the defense and special teams were suppose to be the downfall for the Lions this year. Thus far, it has been the opposite.
Grades:
Offense: --- C. The offense still needs some more consistency. Harrington is finally making some big plays in the 2nd half when the team needs him to. Rookie WR Roy Williams continues to shine as he grabbed two touchdowns.
Defense: --- B+. The defense continues to create turnovers and has been a pleasant surprise thus far. They gave up a lot of yardage late in the game, but it was when the game was out of reach.
Special Teams: --- A. Eddie Drummond's kickoff return was a back breaker for the Texans. Nick Harris had a better game averaging 43 yards a kick.
Coaching: --- B. Mooch has the troops believing they can win every week. The Lions easily could have layed a rotten egg after their victory against the Bears, but they did not.
Overall: --- A. At 2-0 the Lions are alone in the NFC North after the Bears beat the Packers at Lambeau Field. The real test how good the Lions are will come Sunday when they play one of the best teams in the NFL. Philadelphia has looked very impressive thus far in their two victories. This is the biggest Lions game in several years and one can only imagine what a victory would do to erase the pain of the past three seasons. As much as I would love to see the honolulu blue and silver win, don't count on it. Philadelphia has too much weapsons on offense for the Lions defense to handle. It will be an exciting game, but at 2-1 heading into the bye week, the Lions will be in good shape. Hopefully I will be wrong :-)
