News: 10/7/03
Rookie wide receiver Charles Rogers, the Lions' leading receiver after the first five games of the season, suffered a broken collar bone Tuesday and is expected to miss 4-6 games.
Rogers was injured during the first day of practice in the bye week, when coach Steve Mariucci was hoping some of his players would have a chance to get healthy.
The incident occurred when Rogers and cornerback Dre' Bly became entangled in a spirited one-on-one drill early in the 90-minute practice session. Rogers ran a sideline route on a pass thrown by backup quarterback Mike McMahon. Rogers went down and Bly came down on top of him.
Rogers was on his hands and knees on the field for several minutes, then walked to the locker room with trainer Al Bellamy, who diagnosed the injury and sent Rogers to Henry Ford Hospital for treatment.
``It's a freak thing on an off week,'' Bly said. ``We're just out there competing, trying to get better. And then for something to happen like that, I feel bad.''
Mariucci said he had not decided who would start in Rogers' place. He had 22 receptions for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
RECAP
Steve Mariucci probably thinks that
the feud between Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens is just a rumor.
Garcia ran for a touchdown and hit Owens with a six-yard scoring
play to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 24-17 victory over
the Detroit Lions, spoiling the return of Mariucci to the Bay
Area.
Mariucci coached the Niners from 1997-2002 and led them to a
60-43 record, two NFC West titles and four playoff appearances.
But that wasn't good enough for Niners owner John York, who
fired Mariucci three days after a 31-6 loss at Tampa Bay in the
divisional playoffs.
The Lions then pounced on Mariucci, signing him to a five-year,
$25 million contract. Faced with rebuilding the Lions (1-4),
Mariucci has far less pressure than he did when he coached the
Niners, who have Super Bowl aspirations.
The Niners (2-3) appeared to be a team in turmoil with Owens
berating offensive coordinator Greg Knapp on the sidelines
during last week's 35-7 loss at Minnesota. Niners coach Dennis
Erickson did not fine Owens, but Garcia called Owens' latest
outburst "a sickness that can spread."
But the two showed no signs of a deteriorating relationship on
the field on Sunday.
Garcia threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Owens 3:21 into the
game and ran into the end zone to hug his star receiver.
Garcia also hit rookie tight end Aaron Walker with a 14-yard
touchdown in the second quarter to increase the lead to 17-0.
But Mariucci's young Lions fought back and pulled within 17-10
at halftime on a 28-yard field goal by Jason Hanson and a
six-yard touchdown pass from Joey Harrington to Mikhael Ricks.
Garcia scored on a one-yard run with 61 seconds left in the
third quarter.
Scott's Game Commentary:
Just like last week in Denver, the Lions had a chance to take control of the game, but fell short yet again! The game could not of started much worse as Harrington threw an interception on the 1st drive that led to a SF touchdown. The offense went three and out their first three drives and didn't get a first down till half way through the 2nd quarter. With the score 17-0, the Lions cut the lead to 17-10 before the half with the help of Dre Bly's fourth pick of the year. They had numerous chances in the 2nd half to tie the game, but on a critical 4th and 2, Harrington had a terrible throw that could of been a touchdown that was picked off and setup a SF touchdown. Although Harrington got the Lions within seven on the next possession, he couldn't do anything on the Lions last drive after SF missed a 37 yard field goal. Three straight weeks Harrington had a chanced to tie or give the Lions the lead late in the game. Three times he has failed! Just like many of the 19 straight road losses, the Lions were competitive, but just couldn't make the big play when they had to late in the game. San Francisco is not a good team this year and the Lions blew a golden opportunity to get their first victory in the Bay since 1975. At 1-4, the Lions no find themselves alone in the NFC cellar!
Grades:
Offense: --- D. Harrington has a long way to go before he is worth of where the Lions drafted him. His two interceptions were the difference in the game as they led to two SF touchdowns. The back breaker was when the Lions had all the momentum to tie the game, Harrington threw an awful pass on 4th and 2 in SF territory when he could of had Rogers for a big game. The result was a in interception. Bryson and Gary had some good runs today but were not used enough. Once again, penalities doomed the offense. Two drives in the 2nd half came to a halt because of a holding call, including the last drive of the game. Although the offensive line had done a good job protecting Harrington, Joey still gets rid of the ball too fast. Charles Rogers has been very quiet of late and needs to step up and make some big plays like he did at Michigan State. Until the offense can produce late in the game, the Lions will continue to lose.
Defense: --- C-. Dre Bly had his 4th interception that setup a Lions touchdown. The defense gave up 17 points in a hurry, but put the clamps down on Garcia and Owens after that. The "D" made enough plays to give the offense a shot of tieing the game, but could not stop SF when late in the game as Garcia burned the "D" by rushing for a 1st down as he had previously done on prior drives. With Goodman and Cash out for the year, the patched up secondary is holding up pretty well. Robert Porcher is starting to show his age and is only a shell of what he once was.
Special Teams: --- D. With John Jett not playing because of an injury, Jason Hanson did a decent job punting. Some of his kickoffs were short though. The return game is non existant without Drummond. Missing Drummond and Jett were a blow to the special teams today.
Coaching: --- D. It looks like the same old crap as we saw under the previous regimes, but there is only so much the coaching staff can do. On 4th and 2 I wish Maricucci would have ran the ball since Bryson and Gary were getting positive yardage. Soon as I saw Harrington drop back, I knew the drive was over.
Overall: --- F. With Chicago beating Oakland, the Lions are alone in the cellar at 1-4. They could be 4-1 if the offense knew how to make plays late in the game. Same old story week in and week out! Fortunately for the Lions, they have a bye week before playing a vastly improved Dallas team at Ford Field. If the Lions can beat the Cowboys like the have the last two years, they would be 2-4 heading into their best chance of breaking the 19 game road losing streak. I will be heading down to Chicago and the honoululu blue and silver better not botch it like they did last year. A loss to Dallas or Chicago and you can start counting down the days till the season ends. Unfortunately, the best I can see the Lions finishing is 5-11.
