RECAP:
Dick Jauron's job is on the line and his
Chicago Bears played with a sense of urgency.
Chris Chandler passed for 207 yards and a score and Jerry Azumah
returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards for a
touchdown to lead the Bears to a 24-16 victory over the Detroit
Lions in a battle of struggling NFC North rivals.
Jauron was named Coach of the Year after leading the Bears (2-5)
to a 13-3 record and a division title in 2001. Since then, they
had gone just 5-17, placing Jauron's job in peril.
New Lions coach Steve Mariucci has the security of a five-year,
$25 million contract. Not much is expected from Detroit, which
won a total of five games over the last two seasons under Marty
Mornhinweg. But Lions management would like Mariucci to put a
halt to a road losing streak that has now reached 20 games.
Mariucci inherited Detroit's 16-game road losing streak and
extended it to 20 with losses at Green Bay, Denver, San
Francisco and Chicago.
The Lions fell into a 24-0 hole Sunday before staging a late
rally. Reggie Swinton started it with a 96-yard kick return for
a touchdown with 5:23 left in the third quarter and Joey
Harrington connected with Az-Zahir Hakim on the two-point
conversion.
Harrington's three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mikhael
Ricks and two-point conversion toss to Scotty Anderson pulled
the Lions within 24-16 with 53 seconds left in the game.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Lions (1-6) after a
season-opening win over Arizona.
Scott's Game Commentary:
20 straight road losses??? That is how many losses the Lions have had on the road since their last win against the Jets almost three years ago! Same old story at Soldier Field as Harrington and the Offense did squat until the very last drive of the game. How pathetic is it that the Offense went 119 minutes without getting a single touchdown? Harrington, who once again struggled, was not as bad as last week but continues to show no signs of improvement. The Lions really miss WR Charles Rodgers. The WR's had FOUR drops on one drive in the 1st quarter and had eight drops the entire game! The defense played better than last week but did not make any plays to help the offense. After Harrington brought the Lions within eight with a minute to go, the Lions recovered the onside kick but the zebras decided that Schroeder did not go 10 yards and overturned the call. That is just how this season is going for the honolulu blue and silver. They cannot catch any breaks at all. At 1-6 they are alone in the NFC North cellar which is where they have been the past few seasons.
Grades:
Offense: --- F. Not scoring any points till one minute left in the games is inexcuseable! How bad was the offense? They didn't get into field goal territory till late in the 4th quarter and had eight drop passes. Harrington's longest pass was a whooping 19 yards. Bryson and Gary could not do much against the worst run defense in the NFL. The bottom line is without Rogers (the only play maker on the Offense), the Lions will continue to struggle the rest of the season.
Defense: --- C-. The Defense did not make any big plays but did play better than last week. They did hold the Bears to one touchdown in the 2nd half but what good is it when the Offense doesn't know how to score points. Rookie Boss Baily had his best game thus far and hopefully will be the player the Lions envisoned when the drafted him in the 2nd round.
Special Teams: --- B. Although the special teams gave up a touchdown to begin the 2nd half, Reggie Swinton, filling in for Eddie Drummond, returned the favor 96 yards to give the Lions their first touchdown of the game. The special teams also blocked an Edinger field goal in the 2nd half and came up with an onside recovery with a minute to go. But, the Lions got hosed when the officials for some unknown reason overturned the call.
Coaching: --- D. Maricucci needs to work on managing the clock better in the 4th quarter. With the Lions down 16 late in the game, the Offense seemed in no hurry to get to the line of scrimmage. I also did not care for the play calling late in the game either.
Overall: --- F. The Lions are now tied for the 3rd worst losing streak on the road and there is no sign of that streak ending this year. With road games left at Seattle, Minnesota, Kansas City and Carolina it looks like the Lions will break the record for most road losses in a row. Fortunately for the Lions, they are playing two teams just as bad as they are in the next two weeks at home. Next week they should have a good chance winning since Oakland is by far the biggest disappointment in the NFL this year. After Oakland is the rematch with the Bears who always struggle on the road. If the Lions lose both those games, the only remaining game they may win would be against the San Diego Chargers. So much for Mooch rescuing the Lions! All we can hope for is that Millen will get fired at the end of the year. It has been quite obvious for some time the Millen experiment has been a total disaster! Getting rid of Millen and bringing in a GM that knows how to run a football team would definitely be a step in the right direction. But, we all know the history of the Ford ownwership, so nothing would surprise me.
